Your experience

Description

Starting from the Roman ruins of Salona and its amphitheater from the 2nd century AD. This site will take you to one of the biggest Roman achievements on this part of the World.

Salona was an ancient city on the Dalmatian coast. The name Salona preserves the language of the early inhabitants of this area whom the Romans called Dalmatae, and considered to be part of a larger group called Illyrians.

When the Roman Emperor Diocletian retired, he erected a monumental palace nearby; this massive structure, known as Diocletian's Palace, became the core of the modern city of Split. Salona’s continuing prosperity resulted in extensive church building in the fourth and fifth centuries, including an Episcopal basilica and a neighboring church and baptistery inside the walls, and several shrines honoring martyrs outside.

These have made it a major site for studying the development of Christian religious architecture. Salona was largely destroyed in the invasions of the Avars and Slavs in the sixth and seventh centuries CE. Refugees from Salona settled inside the remains of Diocletian's Palace.

Continuing to Trogir (25 minutes driving from Salona), you'll have the pleasure to see the islet that is a unique monument of culture, and was therefore included in UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1997.

Trogir, called "small Venice" or "the city-museum",it is considered to be one of the best preserved Romanesque-Gothic towns of central Europe.

The urban and architectural plan of Trogir has kept its basic medieval structural elements of a fortified town, the typical composition of streets and squares, the representative sacral and secular public facilities and a condensed myriad of other buildings.

And for the last: Split city - "The pearl of the Adriatic"... the second biggest city in Croatia... Diocletian's palace - UNESCO site from 1979, its mausoleum, that ironically become Saint Domnius Cathedral (St. Domnius was martyred in the persecutions of the Emperor Diocletian), will leave you breathless... endless labyrinths of alleys... narrow paved streets, sculptures, open market, fish market...

  • Tour price includes ALL the entrance fees for the major sites in Split (St. Domnius Cathedral, tower bell of the Cathedral, crypt of St. Lucy, Temple of Jupiter), Salona entrance fees and in Trogir (St. Lawrence Cathedral, tower bell of the Cathedral), tour arranging and planning costs, experienced licensed tour guides' fees and travel costs (where needed) and taxes, plus driver's fees (where needed) A/C rent a car/van, fuel, tolls and parking costs.

Feel free to contact me for all of your wishes, plans and whatever is up to your mind... It's up to me to fulfill your imagination...
