Description

Thanks to this tour you will learn why Bologna is called the Educated, the Fat, the Towered, the Red and why is known as the Foodie Capital of Italy.

From art and culture up to gastronomic excellence.

Bologna, chief town of the Italian Region Emilia-Romagna, is worldwide known as "La Dotta" ("The Learned" because it was home to the first university in Europe founded in 1088, even Dante and Petrarch can be numbered among its former students and the 100, 000 students enrolled nowadays make it a lively and cosmopolitan place), "La Grassa" ("The Fat" thanks to reputedly the best cuisine in Italy), "La Rossa" ("The Red" referring to both the colour of its brick buildings and its politics) and "La Turrita" ("The Towered" for the presence of 24 towers of the 100 built in the city around the XII century).

This tour will show you the reason why Bologna is known in Italy and abroad as “dotta, rossa, turrita and … grassa”.

The best way to explore the city is on foot, taking time to admire the architecture and see the wonderful food that you're sure to find in one of the many cheap, cozy and old fashioned restaurants, “trattorie” and “osterie” where you can taste all traditional Bolognese plates such as tortellini, lasagne and mortadella.

The City Centre walking tour starts in Piazza Maggiore, the heart of the city, near Neptune’s square where you can admire Palazzo Re Enzo (King Enzo’s Palace) and the Fountain of Neptune, one of Bologna's symbols. In Piazza Maggiore there are other important monuments like Accursius’ Palace, the Basilica of San Petronio built with the money of Bologna citizens, the Banchi Palace which is not a real palace but a facade.

Walking under the Pavaglione porch the tour leads to Palazzo dell'Archiginnasio, first seat of the University of Bologna until the early XIX century. The walls inside are covered with thousands of coats of arms (visit inside according to opening hours).

A walking tour along the Market streets, a maze of alleys, always crowded with people buying or looking for typical products. Through the historical Food Market we will first reach the two most famous Leaning Towers in Bologna, the Asinelli (97.20 m high) and the Garisenda, and then the gothic Merchants' Palace and the Saint Steven's Church, or better known as the Seven Churches (visit inside according to opening hours).

The tour ends after the visit of Corte Isolani, a tipical medieval court.
