Eixample means "city expansion" and the quarter is characterized by its straight streets with flattened corner facades. The city walls were demolished in 1854 and the empty area between the overcrowded old town and the village of Gracia was finally allowed to be built on.
The right Eixample, also known as the Golden Square, is the area where industrialists, big bourgeoisie and Catalans (the so-called Indianos) who made money in South America had their spectacular city palaces built by the star architects of that time.
The magnificent buildings were intended to showcase the wealth of the wealthy population.
Among the architects were Domènech i Montaner, Puig i Cadafalch and of course Gaudí - who could let off steam in this quarter.
The Modernist movement was born.
Catalan modernism was not only a new architectural style, but also a cultural renewal movement in literature and fine arts that was formed around 1885.
During our Barcelona city tour of the Golden Square, we will look at the most important buildings built by modernist architects. You will be able to admire the many architectural treasures of this quarter.
This tour through Barcelona is a three weather tour. We stroll through the city on sunny, windy and rainy. Even heavy showers don't stop us.
When the sun is at its zenith during the summer months, don't forget your sunglasses, hat and cream. A small bottle of water can also do no harm. In winter, a jacket or a thin coat is usually enough.
So that you can experience the hustle and bustle of the city up close, your guide will stay on the streets and squares during this city tour. Monuments are usually admired from the outside. Visits to museums and interiors (with a few exceptions) are not part of the programme.
The tour is a leisurely walk without rushing. There is always time for a break to take photos. And a toilet break is also taken.
If you are fit enough to go shopping, you are also fit enough for our tours. You don't have to climb hills or endless stairs. Since we are on foot, you should wear comfortable footwear.
