Lean back and enjoy the comfortable bus ride as you head to the little gem on the Old Appian Way, the Catacombs of St. Sebastian. Apart from the catacombs you will also visit the Basilica of St. Sebastian itself, before you can admire the beauty of the Latium Countryside just a few miles outside of Rome. According to a legend, the catacombs once held the human remains of the apostles of St. Peter and St. Paul during the time of the persecution. On this walking tour your guide will introduce you to the front of the Basilica before entering in order to see the tomb and sculpture of the Saint it was named after – St. Sebastian.
Afterwards you will walk down to the Catacombs of St. Sebastian which were the 1st underground burial site on this ancient road. Let your guide lead you down to five different levels of niches, in which the bodies were buried tightly wrapped in sheets and covered with gravestones.
After said experience, we will follow the Via Appia where you can still see the traces of chariot wheels that once passed through to get to the South of Italy. Arriving in front of the Cecilia Metella Tomb you will learn about the history of the place that later became the castle of the Caetani family.
Our last stop will be the largest ever created aqueduct by the Romans, the magnificent Aqueduct Park, which we will reach after a short bus ride. You can admire the aqueduct Marcio that is still being used today, surrounded by many other ancient water suppliers with their majestic arches extended for miles.
