Your experience

  • Discover the ancient city of Herculaneum and see it nearly as it existed more than 2,000 years ago
  • See some of the villas of Herculaneum's wealthiest citizens
  • Go the Grande Palestra (Big Gym) and feel like an archaeologist exploring the volcanic evidence

Most people just know about the destruction of famous city Pompeii by the devastating eruption of the Vesuvius, but there was another city ruined in August 79 AD: Herculaneum, the smaller, but no less interesting sister of Pompeii. After being buried under tons of volcanic ash for hundreds of years its discovery in the seventeenth century stunned people all over the world.

You will find the whole ancient town lying about 75 feet deep at the bottom of an archaeological hole, because the excavation still goes on in present time. As interesting as this ruins are the 300 human skeletons that was found in boat houses and the marina of Herculaneum.

Like Pompeii this city exhibit ancient town mansions, partially good preserved buildings as well as antique works of art and sculptures (which are in the Naples National Archaeological Museum today).

Explore the garden of the House of Albergo, where trees ave been replanted following evidence of carbonized roots of the ancient fruit tree. At the Council Hall of the Augustali you will get an impression of the art of the ancient world and look at beautiful frescoes, that picture the mythological hero Hercules.

Enjoy some impressive old mosaics in the House of Neptune and Amphitrite or the neighboring store with wine and food, which were carbonized during the eruption but still hang on the walls. In the former spa of the city you will spot more fascinating ancient mosaics, presenting the Roman saunas, gyms, cold tubs and hot rooms.

At the end of your tour see the most spectacular villa of Herculaneum, the Villa dei Cervi, with its luxurious mosaics, frescoes, and statues.
