Description

The Georgian Military Road leads from the North Caucasus through the Darial Pass towards Iran and India. It is considered to be one of the oldest historical paths and represented the thin mountain pass that was very difficult to use. The road lies next to the Aragvi River whose valley is gradually narrowed.

Our tour starts at 9:00 am in Tbilisi, capital and largest city of Georgia. At first we will drive to Stepantsminda, the former Kazbegi, that is situated in the north east of Georgia. On the way we will pass Zhinvali and the Zhinvali lake until arriving an impressive architectural complex – the castle Ananuri. Especially its richly ornamented dome is well worth-seeing and shows, that this castle belonged one of the strongest feudal families of Georgia. Another popular architectural highlight of the nation is the large Church of Assumption that was built in 1689 and is characterized by the extravagantly decorated façade of its central dome. Inside this church one can find the remains of some interesting frescoes that were mostly destroyed by a fire in 18th century.
When we reach Ananuri and the Zhinvali water reservoir you can have breakfast and enjoy Pasanauri's amazing mountain nature, Gudauri mountains and Mleta and Dzhvari passes. Here you will find Mleta's steep serpentines ("mother-in-law's languages") a sharply road, at an altitude of 100 metres, rises to Mleta pass. From this height we will enjoy a fascinating view of the snow tops of Georgia's famous mountain “Seven Brothers”.
The tour continues to Stepantsminda in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region where we will visit the Monastery of Gergeti Trinity Church that was built in 14th and 15th century ans is situated on the 2200 metre high Mount Kazbek. This mountain is the highest peak of Eastern Georgia and the third highest one of the whole country.
After visiting the monastery we come to the town of Stepantsiminda where a dense and testy lunch will wait for you.
