Unfortunately this tour was only in English, so we only got half of the information. (therefore only groove "Good"). After all, there was a German, very good lead in a small group down in the catacombs.

great

This excursion is very interesting and easy. First we went to the Calixtus Catacombs, then to Via Appia Antica and finally to the Park of Aqueducts (beautiful landscape!), all comfortably by bus. Stefanie (very nice) told us many interesting stories. The only downer: the group was manageable, but thrown together from French, Americans, Canadians and Australians and just us two Ösis. The tour was conducted in English. No problem for us, because Steffi spoke a simple, easy to understand English. But if someone didn't speak English at all, he probably would have been disappointed

good

Sympathetic leader. Advantage: Quick entrance to the catacomb. Disadvantage: One does not see much of the Via Appia. After all (!) the aqueducts! But I guess that's all there is to it. With a duration of three hours, the difficult arrival and departure is there. (Perhaps one should / could offer an even longer guided tour, with which one moves even more on the Via Appia?)

Your experience

Highlights

  • Get to know Rome away from the famous sights in the city centre
  • Learn many interesting backgrounds about the history of Rome
  • Discover the underground catacombs and the Via Appia Antica

Description

With a private transfer and on foot, you will explore the impressive catacombs of Rome and walk along the rural Roman road Via Appia until you reach the sublime aqueduct arches that have been preserved from ancient Rome.

Your tour highlights:
Calixtus Catacombe (also called Callistus Catacomb, Italian Catacombe di San Callisto) or Sebastian Catacombs (former tomb of the martyr Sebastian; Italian Catacombe di San Sebastiano) with visit from inside, tomb of Cecilia Metella (visit from outside), Via Appia Antica with original Roman cobblestones, Roman aqueducts.

First you drive from the central meeting point to the Via Appia and further on to the southern part of the old town of Rome. With your guide, you will stop three times to explore the Roman countryside on foot, to discover the legendary underground catacombs, and to see the masterfully imposing architecture of the ancient aqueducts of Rome.

In the true sense of the word "all roads lead to Rome". To this day, parts of the ancient Roman road network, especially at the gates of Rome, are still passable. The large cobblestones have been laid so deep in the ground and so ingeniously that they have survived for thousands of years.

Due to the increasing spread of Christianity, it became necessary to find a large number of burial sites in Rome. At the gates of the city, the solution was found in the porous limestone tufa rock where a total of more than 60 catacombs have been excavated over several levels. Until the 5th century the catacombs were further extended by the Christians. Currently only some of them are open to visitors.

The necessary water supply of the city with its large thermal baths was guaranteed by a sophisticated aqueduct system. Even the Trevi Fountain is still fed with water from the surrounding area by an ancient watercourse.
