Your experience

  • Visit the birthplace of Christian monasticism
  • Visit the Monastery of the Romans, the St. Pischoi Monastery and the Monastery of the Syrians and learn more about their fascinating background
  • Enjoy a comfortable transport with a private vehicle

The monasteries of Wadi El-Natrun are among the oldest Coptic monasteries in the world and played a central role in the development of the Coptic community in Egypt. In early Christian times many Christian monks settled in the desert of Wadi Natrun. In the course of the Arab conquest of Egypt there were conflicts with the Muslim government and many of the monasteries were destroyed. Four of the monasteries have been preserved until today, three of which you can visit.

You meet your guide at your hotel and set off in a modern, air-conditioned vehicle to your first destination: the monastery of Deir El-Baramous. The Baramäus monastery is also known as the "Monastery of the Romans" and is the oldest monastery complex in the wadi. Admire the unique religious symbols and murals and learn more about the history of this fascinating monastery

Then go to the St. Pischoi Monastery, which was founded in the 4th century by St. Pischoi. Visit the tomb of Saint Pischoi and the new cathedral. Stroll through the romantic monastery garden and take a short break. Climb to the roof of the monastery and enjoy the breathtaking view of the desert

Finally you will visit the Monastery of the Syrians, which was built by a Syrian merchant for Syrian monks. Admire medieval frescoes and see many other religious symbols. Take a look at the famous altar wall, the mysterious wall paintings and learn more about their meaning. Afterwards you will make your way back to your hotel
