Description

The medieval town in northern Italy is surrounded by several artificial lakes fed by the Mincio River. These were built for defence purposes and give it a unique island character. Learn more about the eventful history of the city, which is connected to the mainland by two bridges.

Visit the wedding palace (Palazzo Ducale), one of the largest mansions where the famous Gonzaga family resided. A detour to the newly restored ducal court is worthwhile. A special highlight are the artistic frescoes in the Camera degli Sposi, in English wedding room. Get to know the period of the Italian Renaissance and admire the works of art created by Andrea Mantegna at that time. The painter and engraver was specially hired by the Gonzaga family to immortalize the family members. The rest of the palace is also artistic and architectural.

The "Cultural Capital of Italy 2016" has even more sights to offer. Visit the church of Sant' Andrea, considered one of the founding buildings of the Renaissance. Its architect, Leone Battista Alberti, spent his life researching ancient architecture and created a true place of pilgrimage with the new church. Enter the place where hundreds of believers have already traveled to see the relic of the Holy Blood of Christ and let the work of three centuries take effect.

Afterwards you will admire the pleasure palace Palazzo Te, a unique mixture of palace and villa. The building, decorated with Venetian windows, was designed by Giulio Romano. Discover how the master builder follows the basic rules of Leone Battista Alberti and yet breaks with classical Renaissance architecture in a fascinating way
