Description

In the 1960s the capital of Cyprus was divided into the southern and northern parts, with the south belonging to Greece and the north to Turkey. Nicosia is thus one of the last divided cities in Europe Start your tour with a visit to the southern part of the city. As you pass the Venetian city wall, you will pass the Famagusta Gate and the Bishop's Palace. Admire the impressive Freedom Monument and then visit St. John's Cathedral, which is one of the main sights of the southern old town. In the cathedral you can admire numerous religious frescos

Stroll along the lively Ledra Street, which is full of shops, restaurants and cafés. In the middle of this main road runs the border between the Greek and Turkish part of the city, which you will cross. Start your exploration of the Turkish part of the city with a visit to the Selimiye Mosque. The mosque is considered the most important mosque in the city and was built after the model of Notre Dame Then you will visit Büyük Han, a hostel built by the Ottomans, which was formerly used by travellers. Today there are many craft shops and small galleries. The charming cafés invite you to linger and take a short coffee break. Finally you will visit Büyük Hamam to take a traditional Turkish steam bath
