Your experience

Highlights

  • Pay a visit to the enchanting city of the queens
  • Visit the monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage
  • Get to know the history of the buildings and learn about their architecture

Description

First you will visit the historic village of Obidos. The acting king traditionally bequeathed the charming village for his wife's wedding, which is why it is also known as the city of queens. Let yourself be enchanted by the historic town centre and the small, romantic alleys, almost all of which are decorated with flowers. On the spot you should definitely try the delicious liqueur Ginja, which is made from sour cherries.

Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to visit two impressive buildings that are part of the selected circle of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Both the monastery of Alcobaça and the monastery of Batalha are closely interwoven with the history of Portugal and also illustrate different architectural styles.

The monastery of Alcobaça is the older of the two. It was built by Portugal's first king and is still home to the country's largest church. Learn about the legends surrounding the monastery and admire the beauty of the most important Cistercian monastery. The Order played a decisive role in the agricultural and cultural development of the country.

The monastery of Batalha is an outstanding example of the late Gothic style. Visit the architectural masterpiece built in gratitude for Portugal's victory in the battle against the powerful army of Castile. The royal family generously supported the construction, which explains the sophisticated decoration of the monastery. Afterwards you will visit the fishing village of Nazare, where you can taste fresh fish or delicious seafood for lunch
