Your experience

  • Explore the Arab quarter Kampong Glam on a relaxing walk
  • Walk along the busy streets where typical goods are on sale
  • Try Arabic and Malaysian specialities

Let us take you on a relaxed walk through the Arab quarter and immerse you in the lively atmosphere of Kampong Glam. Your guide will show you the most beautiful corners and tell you the stories of the different places in this unique part of the city.

Before the British colonization of Singapore, the Malay nobles of Singapore lived in the area that is today Kampong Glam. In the year 1822, the area was assigned to the Sultan and should offer a home to the Malay and Arabic community in Singapore. Many of them were merchants and traders and so today's Kampong Glam with its numerous shops developed.

Visit an old cemetery and learn about Malay culture and customs. See also the impressive Sultan Mosque, one of the oldest and largest mosques in Singapore. It is considered one of the most important mosques in the city and was declared a monument in 1975. During your visit, admire the high minarets, the golden domes and the beautiful balustrades of this extraordinary building.

On the very popular streets Arab Street and Bussorah Street, traditional goods such as Persian carpets, kebaya dresses and handmade perfumes without alcohol are offered, which you are welcome to view or purchase directly. Here you will certainly find a souvenir for family or friends. See the original boutiques and small cafés and take a break with a cup of tea. Those who are hungry will also find a large selection of typical dishes such as Nasi Padang or Malaysian Kuih.

Also see the architectural features of Kampong Glam, such as the so-called shophouses. These were mostly two-storey houses, in which the ground floor was used as sales area, while the trader had his apartment on the first floor. These buildings are typical for the area and often have very low ceilings and simple ornaments as decoration.
