Your experience

Highlights

  • Explore the fortress of Belgrade - Kalemegdan
  • Experience the old town of Zemun with its small alleyways and feel the spirit of the local life
  • Be impressed by the residence of Princess Ljubica, which today is a fascinating Orthodox cathedral
  • Overview of the whole region from the highest point of the Gardoš Millennium Tower

Description

After your guide has picked you up at the agreed meeting point, you will first leave for Belgrade Fortress. You will have the opportunity to visit and explore it. On site you will hear many different Turkish words like: Sahat tower, turbe or stambol gate. All these words describe important parts of the fortress, which your guide will explain to you during the tour. Also enjoy the impressive view of the Sava and Danube flowing together here.

After you have left the fortress, you will continue to Zemun, the part of the city that is still influenced by the Ottomans. You will pass through Kosancicev venac, a Serbian quarter that developed under Ottoman rule and houses a fascinating Orthodox cathedral. The cathedral was once the residence of Princess Ljubica and patriarchs. There you will be able to reach and admire Zemun, a city within a city.

Today Zemun is known for its wonderful restaurants and taverns. A century ago it was nevertheless one of the most powerful Austro-Hungarian empires.

But the most interesting and exciting thing about Zemum is Gardoš, with its old houses, churches and hidden corners. Here you can feel the spirit of the local life and you will notice that the time here is slower, probably because the people here are much more relaxed than those who live and work in the busy streets of Belgrade.

At the highest point of the Gardoš Millennium Tower, you can overlook the entire region and experience a breathtaking view of Zemun and the Danube. The tower was built by the Hungarians to preserve their one thousand year rule in the region for history.

After visiting Gardoš, you will probably need a short break and a snack. Your guide will show you a local café or tavern with a good selection and a beautiful view. Here you have the opportunity to pause for a while and let the tour end.
