Description

In 1915, during the First World War, an important battle took place in the town of Gorlice, which marked a turning point on the Eastern Front. At that time, the city was located in the Austro-Hungarian crown land of Galicia and became the scene of the so-called "breakthrough battle". Here the troops of the Central Powers achieved a decisive breakthrough against Russia.

After the battle the fallen soldiers were first buried in the fields near the trenches until the War Ministry in Vienna ordered the construction of military cemeteries. All bodies that had already been buried on the battlefields were exhumed and buried in appropriate graves. However, this task was only fully carried out in western Galicia. So here, around 400 military cemeteries were designed by the most famous Galician architect of the time. Situated along the roads, waters and hills of the region, they shape the image of the Bialka Valley

On this tour your guide will show you the most interesting war cemeteries of the region. First you stop at the cemeteries No. 117 and No. 118 in Staszkówka. Afterwards you continue to Łużna, where you will find cemetery no. 123, the largest war cemetery. More than 1,000 soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian, German and Russian armies were buried here. The tour continues to Gorlice, where you can visit the military cemetery no. 91 and the town museum with an exhibition on the Battle of Gorlice. As the Polish petroleum industry was also founded in Gorlice, it is also worth visiting the old production sites. It is followed by war cemetery no. 60 at the pass Małastowska and finally cemetery no. 50 on the mountain Rotunda. Your guide will tell you everything about the course, circumstances and outcome of the battle and will answer all your questions.

If you wish, you can also visit several wooden churches from the 15th to the 18th century in the region, which have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
