Your experience

Description

In the first year of World War 1 Russians advanced towards West and South clashing with German and Austrian armies. The fights took place in divided by then Poland and the biggest Russian success was almost complete capture of Galicia by the end of the year 1914.

Although stopped by Kraków, Russians kept pressing Austrian defence line along the Carpathian range, with attempt to flow through the low passes onto the Hungarian plains and eventually seize Budapest and Vien – while Austrians without success tried to counter-attack through the same passes to free Przemyśl fortress under the siege, far behind the lines.

So called Winter War in Carpathians 1914/1915, completely unknown even for those who has an interest in history, might had caused even more casualties than Verdun Battle, considered the biggest battle in the history. Unprepared for tough winter conditions soldiers were dying not only in direct fights but from the snow storms, freeze, hunger and exhaustion, those injured were being killed by wolfs, many went suicide.

Nor Russians succeed to pass the Carpathians, or Austrians made the way to free Przemyśl, which eventually surrendered in March 1915.

This caused the Germans to take over the military planning and prepare the massive offensive from the Biała River line, starting on May the 2nd. The front extended from Tarnów to the south of Gorlice in Carpathian Mountains, but the heaviest fights took place in Gorlice area, and the town was almost completely shuttered by the artillery.

Russians tried to keep the lines but within few days the front collapsed and the big withdrawal had started. Fallen soldiers, initially were buried in the fields by the trenches, but imperial Ministry of War in Vien soon initiated the plan of building war cemeteries where exhumed from all battlefields bodies were to be collected and re-buried in respectful graves. The task was completed fully only in Western Galicia, thus this battlefield remained unique.

400 war cemeteries of Western Galicia were designed and created by the most prominent and well-known Galician architects of that time. Located by the roads, streams and hilltops, well-preserved or freshly renovated, they make the significant landmarks in Biała Valley region.

The tour route pases the most interesting ones: war cemeteries‘ no 117 and no 118 in Staszkówka, war cemetery no 123 in Łużna by the Pustki Hill – the largest one, war cemetery no 91 in Gorlice, Gorlice town museum with Gorlice Battle exposition, war cemetery no 60 on Małastowska Pass, war cemetery no 51 on Rotunda Mountain.

Gorlice region is also famous as the place where oil industry was born, so it is worth to take the opportunity of visiting the old oil wedges and open air museums.

Additional option is visiting remarkable old wooden churches marked on UNESCO heritage list.

The tour is based on my tourist guide "Dolina Białej” The River Biala Valley), published in 2008 in Polish.
