Description

At the beginning of the 20th century an amazing discovery was made in the south of Italy: Near Bisceglie, a burial site that must be several thousand years old was found - the Dolmen di Chianca. Discover this archaeological find on this tour and learn all about the history behind it!

A dolmen usually consists basically of three or more vertical stones that support a large horizontal stone, thus forming a kind of table. However, the individual designs vary in their composition from stone to stone. Most of the dolmens date back to the early Neolithic period between 4000 and 3000 BC. They were usually covered with earth or smaller stones to form a burial mound, but this type of covering often could not withstand the weather, so that only the stone framework remained intact

On August 6, 1909, the tomb in Chianca was finally discovered and further explored by doctors and archaeologists. The crypt has a long corridor with a burial chamber. This chamber is 1.80 meters high and was built from three large limestone slabs. The covering panel has a surface area of almost 10 square metres

The excavations in the chamber and the corridor have brought many human remains to light. It is estimated that about ten people were buried here. Some elements for the decoration of the site have also been found, such as ceramic vases, pearl necklaces and pendants, tools for handicraft, blades and medals. Almost in the middle of the dolmen the remains of a fireplace were found, which was probably lit many times to perform rituals.

Surrounded by olive trees in the middle of Italy this find is unique. The UNESCO world heritage site is definitely worth a visit!
