Description

Explore Berlin Mitte away from the classic sights and stroll through the city's backyards. Experience the history and stories of the last 300 years hidden in the old alleys of the trendy district around the Hackesche Höfe

The tour begins at Hackescher Markt, leads through the Schwarzenberg House, where time seems to have stood still, and through the famous Hackesche Höfe, where you will learn all about the time.

Follow the small streets, which even today correspond to the city layout of the 18th century. Following the footsteps of the old Jewish community you will then reach the New Synagogue. You will hear exciting stories from the history of the St. Hedwig Hospital, the baroque St. Sophia Church and the Jewish cemetery from 1671.

Some of the backyards you will visit are so tranquil that you will almost forget the turbulent Berlin

Other farms were completely changed over time, horse stables became restaurants, factories became galleries and poor tenements became luxury apartments. Nowadays you can search in vain for sleepy boys and workers' children, because gentrification has Berlin Mitte firmly in its grip

After the fall of the wall, this quarter, which was located in the east of the city, was taken over by squatters, students and young artists; today you can find the highest rents in the city here.

The tour ends in front of Clärchens Ballhaus, the oldest ballroom in Berlin, which still adorns the entrance sign of regular guest Otto Dix. Once located in the backyard, you can now enjoy your beer in the front garden, where doors lead into nowhere and the walls still show that a front house is missing here

On this tour, the testimonies of history are contrasted with modern life.
