Walk through the streets of Amritsar on your way to the Golden Temple in the center of the city. The Golden Temple is the holiest Gurdwara of the Sikhs. Amritsar literally means "nectar lake" (in the sense of nectar er immortality) and was founded in 1577 by the fourth Sikh Guru Guru Ram Das. The Gurdwara, as it can be seen today, was rebuilt in 1764 by Jassa Singh Ahluwalia with the help of other Sikh Misls. In the early 13th century the Maharaja Ranjit Singh saved the region of Punjab from attacks from outside. He covered the floors of the upper floors of the Gurdwara with gold. This is where the distinctive appearance and the English name come from

Then visit the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum. Before his rise to power, the Punjab region had many declarations of war. Twelve of them under the rule of Sikh and one under that of a Muslim. Ranjit Singh successfully ended the disputes, united the Sikh and united local kingdoms into the Sikh Empire. He repeatedly fought against invasions by Muslim armies, some of which came from Afghanistan, and created friendly relations with the British. You will learn more about the life of the Maharaja in the museum

Finish your tour with the famous Amritsari Kulcha and a lassi at a local snack bar famous for its snacks
At the end of the tour you will be taken back to the Golden Temple. From there you can explore the city on your own
