Description

The name Saaz is famous worldwide for the hops named after it. "Saaz Hop" is considered an exquisite variety that is used worldwide for brewing beer. It is now cultivated not only in the Czech Republic, but also in the USA. However, this "emigration" does not detract from the fame of the original Saaz hops, which was already mentioned in the 11th century. Since 2007 Žatecký chmel (Saaz hops) is a protected designation of origin of the EU. Anyone interested in beer - and not just beer - will therefore visit the "Hops and Beer Temple" in Saaz, where you will learn all about this fine seasoning and its use in the art of brewing. Afterwards you can enjoy the product from the brewery for a hearty snack.

The complex of buildings called the "Hop and Beer Temple" (Chrám chmele a piva) is located in the so-called Prague suburb (Horní Předměstí) of Saaz, where the large processing and storage houses of the hop trade were located in the 19th century. Even earlier the Hussite bulwarks against the Catholic crusaders were located here, which is why the square in front of the "beer temple" is also named after the Hussite leader Prokop Velky. The city council and the EU - especially the latter - have spent nine million euros on this project, which includes the renovation of other objects in the Prague suburb, namely the old malthouse, the Hussite hill remains, the Capuchin monastery garden and the local supply network. The Hop Museum, which was previously supported by an association, was also included. The complex was opened on 28 October 2010 and is now applying for inclusion as a technical monument on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
