Travel back in time and around the world with the fascinating collection of antique art, architecture and artifacts at the Pergamon Museum.
The Pergamon Museum is filled with classical sculptures, impressive architecture, colourful tapestries and enough historical artifacts to make a thousand Indiana Jones films. Highlights include the famous Ishtar Gate, a fragment of the Gilgamesh epic, and the market gate of Milete. With these Skip-the-Line-Tickets you can get directly to a museum that is not only one of the best museums on Museum Island, but also one of the best in the world.
The world-famous Pergamon Museum in Berlin has three major thematic areas: the Collection of Classical Antiquities, the Museum of Islamic Art and the Museum of the Middle East. Every single collection alone would be enough to justify a visit, but with all three? Well, you have just tripled your reasons to dive into the Perg (as it is known).
The works come from ancient Greece, Rome, Babylon and the Middle East and show how advanced these ancient societies were. One highlight is the Ishtar Gate. This light blue glazed brick wall is decorated with city gods in the form of dragons, lions and bulls. A stone fragment of the Gilgamesh epic is an excerpt from one of the world's oldest literary works - the history of this hero can be found in the works of Homer and the Bible.
But Pergamon is not about one single piece in its (admittedly huge and varied) collection, but a visit to the depth and breadth of human history.
Due to ongoing renovation work, the Pergamon altar will not be open to the public until 2019. But don't worry: there are many more antiques to make it worthwhile for you.
