Your experience

Description

On this luxurious day trip you will explore the history of this coveted rock, from the heights of the monastery to the swamps of the surrounding floodplain. With transport and high-speed train, you will spend more time on the Mont than on any other day trip from Paris. There is really no complete tour on the market anymore.

Your day begins at the Montparnasse station in the centre of Paris. Here you will meet your expert guide and a group of maximum 18 people and board the city's first high-speed train. With a speed of 200 mph, it takes only 1.5 hours to get to Rennes, plus one hour and twenty minutes by private minibus. Most tours from Paris go by bus, which takes 5.5 hours each way (more if traffic is bad). This means that most visitors only spend 4 hours on Mont Saint-Michel, while you can enjoy a full 7 hours

The order of this tour strongly depends on the tides coming in and going out in the bay. Most visitors never explore the sand here, but you will. Under the guidance of a specially trained nature guide, you will take off your shoes and go out onto the Wadden Sea to discuss the unique nature and environment around Mont Saint-Michel and even see some of the dreaded quicksand that trapped the pilgrims who were about to cross the bay. Don't worry, your guide won't leave you stuck, but he will show you how to get out of the quicksand. From here you also have a breathtaking view of the village and the monastery, so make sure you bring a camera

Back in the village you will enjoy a two-hour walk through the medieval streets and fortified walls, where your guide will tell you the colourful history of this small but strategically important community. From Irish monks and Bretton bishops to English barons, French kings and countless religious pilgrims; it seems that everyone in Western Europe has wanted a piece of this little rock at some point. Once you are in the monastery, you will understand why

After a lunch break (with many recommendations from your guide, where you can enjoy the local speciality omelettes), you will go to the abbey to discover the Gothic architecture and its history. Your guide will not be able to follow you, but he or she will tell you about the history of the building and what to look out for before you go in with your audio guide. As it was used as a prison after the French Revolution, one can see clear memories of human imprisonment here, like a human "hamster wheel" operated by prisoners to carry goods up the hill. The highlight is when you climb to the top of the tower and, on clear days, enjoy a 360-degree view of the bay, ocean and surrounding countryside. After that you might want to conquer the village yourself

At the end of the tour you will get back on the bus and take the train back to Paris

Please note

  • Please note that the meeting time is 15 minutes before the start time. There is no refund or rebooking for late arrivals or no-shows after the start or end of the tour.
  • Please note that the order of the pages visited depends on the tides. If the tide is unusually high, it is not possible to visit the bay. The tour through the bay is done barefoot; therefore, it is recommended to bring a small towel and a bag or rucksack in which one can put one's shoes during the tour. A jacket is highly recommended, even in summer.
  • While exploring the bay, guests will occasionally wade through sand, clay and water that reaches up to their ankles. In the warmer months they are barefoot. In the colder months boots are provided.
