Your experience

Description

We meet early, near the Montparnasse train station, where you, your experienced tour guide and 15 fellow travellers will take the first high-speed train of the day to Bordeaux. In just two hours, get off at Bordeaux City and take a private minibus to Saint-Émilion. Once there, you can make a tour of this historic city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ancient Romans first planted vines here in the 2nd century, so there is no better place to start their tour. Your visit will include a look into the seven stories of the caves that guard a treasure trove of aging wine.

Your first stop is a small winery in the centre of Saint Emilion. After an introduction to the different types of wines produced in the region, we will visit the old cellars to taste some of the wines you have just discovered and enjoy a delicious Bordeaux-Macaron, which is slightly different from its cousin in Paris, but perhaps even more delicious.

Then you get back into the minibus and drive to a nearby castle; only twenty minutes drive through the lovely, hilly landscape. Here you will take a tour of the vineyards and learn how the region's climate and geology come together to produce famous, infamous, robust red wines. You will also come to the castle's fragrance garden to test your palate on edible plants and get a taste of some of the flavours hidden in the wines. Finally, you will visit the old tower of the castle to taste two of its wines.

Before you go, sit down for lunch on a terrace overlooking the vineyards. The menu changes seasonally, but you should also think of local meat and products, fresh, natural ingredients and of course another glass of wine in the house.

With a full stomach, you jump back into the minibus and drive to a much smaller, family-run winery, where you can also find some of the oldest Bordeaux grape varieties. The owner will show you around and tell you the story of the fire that almost destroyed the European wine industry before the rescue came from a very surprising source. After the tour you will enjoy a tasting barrique in which the owner will tap some of his barrels and fill your glasses directly from them. You will taste a wine that is still ageing, so that you can understand how its taste changes during the process, then taste two different white wines, one of them from some of the oldest wines in France. As a special treat, you can taste a Bordeaux wine which is a very old type of Bordeaux wine that is almost extinct but is now being revived in the region.

After all this food and drink, you'll probably want to take a nap. Fortunately, it's time to take the bus back to Bordeaux City, where you take the train back to Paris.
