Description

We meet early, near the Montparnasse station, where you, your experienced guide and 15 fellow travellers will take the first high-speed train of the day to Bordeaux. In only two hours you get off the bus in Bordeaux City and take a private minibus to Saint-Émilion. Once there, you can take a tour of this historic city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ancient Romans first planted vines here in the 2nd century, so there is no better place to start your tour. Your visit includes a glimpse into the seven stories of the caves that guard a treasure trove of aging wine

Your first stop is a small winery in the centre of Saint Emilion. After an introduction to the different types of wine produced in the region, you will go to the old cellars to taste some of the wines you have just met and enjoy a delicious Bordeaux Macaron, slightly different from its Parisian cousin, but perhaps even more delicious

Then get back on the minibus and drive to a nearby castle; only twenty minutes drive through the lovely hilly countryside. Here you will take a tour of the vineyards and learn how the climate and geology of the region come together to produce notoriously robust red wines. You will also come to the castle's scent garden to test your palate on edible plants and get a taste of some of the flavours hidden in the wines. Finally, you will drive to the old tower of the castle to taste two of their wines

Before you leave, sit down for lunch on a terrace overlooking the vineyards. The menu changes seasonally, but you should also think of local meat and products, fresh, natural ingredients and of course another glass of wine in the house

With a full stomach, you hop back on the minibus and drive to a much smaller, family-run winery, which also has some of the oldest grape varieties in Bordeaux. The owner will show you around and tell you the story of the fire that almost destroyed the European wine industry before the rescue came from a very surprising source. After the tour you will enjoy a tasting barrique where the owner will tap some of his barrels and fill your glasses directly from them. You will taste a wine that is still aging so that you can understand how its taste changes during the process, then you will taste two different white wines, one of which is made from some of the oldest wines in France. As a special treat, you can taste a very old type of Bordeaux wine that is almost extinct but is now being revived in the region

After all that food and drink, you will probably want to take a nap. Fortunately, it is time to take the bus back to Bordeaux City, where you take the train back to Paris. You arrive in Montparnasse at 21.00 hrs and have enough time to enjoy a late dinner.
