Your experience

This is an in-depth exploration of the stories, myths, legends and lore behind the stones of the most interesting quarter of Paris. From the Gothic splendour of the bell towers of Notre Dame, which inspired Victor Hugo to create his hunchbacked bell ringer, to the darkest cells of the Conciergerie, where condemned dissidents waited for death during the Revolutionary Reign of Terror, the Île de la Cité has experienced the best and the worst of Parisian history and you will hear all the stories that make it a special place

Your tour starts in Notre Dame where you will meet your expert guide and a small group of 15 people or less. Inside you will admire the famous rose window, marvel at the breathtaking arches of the cathedral's Gothic architecture and learn how Victor Hugo and his bell ringer of Notre Dame saved this beautiful building from demolition.

The tour continues to the most beautiful chapel of the city - Sainte Chapelle. If you think the Rose Window of Notre Dame is beautiful, Sainte Chapelle will blow you up. This royal chapel was originally built as a reliquary and is still one of the most breathtaking rooms in Paris. It is also one of the most popular attractions of the city. Fortunately, you have skip-the-line tickets so you can enjoy the chapel when it is almost empty.

After a short walk, you will stop at the Conciergerie, a beautiful building with a dark past that housed the tribunals of the French Revolution and where political prisoners are held awaiting their appointment with the guillotine. The building was recently renovated, including the cell where Marie Antoinette spent the last days before her execution, under heavy guard and in very difficult conditions. You will also see a second cell, where it was kept short, now converted into a small chapel

While your tour ends at the Concert Hall, your tour guide will give you further information on how to return to Notre Dame to redeem your flexible tickets for the line tickets to the towers. You will pass the long lines and go straight in to see the famous gargoyles and the bell tower where Victor Hugo's hunchback lived. With this ticket you also have access to the highest point of the cathedral, with 360 degree views, for our favorite views of the city. From Notre Dame, you have the entire city at your feet.

Please note

Additional information

The Notre Dame towers and the upper floor of Sainte Chapelle are unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.

As in all museums, some galleries of the monuments of the Ile de la Cité may be closed without notice, or selected pieces may be removed for restoration or loan purposes. In this case your guide will provide an appropriate replacement.

The cathedrals of Notre Dame and Sainte Chapelle are places of worship and require a visit in appropriate clothing; both men and women must wear clothes that cover the shoulders and knees

Notre Dame Cathedral restricts access to some parts of the church during mass.

To ensure the safety of visitors, the French authorities enforce security measures when entering the attractions of the Ile de la Cité. Suitcases, luggage and larger bags are not allowed. Only bags smaller than 55 cm x 35 cm x 20 cm are allowed. We apologize for the delay or inconvenience caused by additional security checks.

Please note that there are 422 steps to the top of the south tower of Notre Dame. Unfortunately there is no access to the elevator. Persons with heart problems, claustrophobia or other complaints should consider this before booking this tour.

Please make sure that all members of your group have a valid identification card with them on the day of the visit. This is especially important for guests who have qualified for a student or child discount.

Comfortable hiking boots recommended.
