Your experience

Highlights

  • Visit the Paris Catacombs without queuing, the most visited tourist attraction in Paris
  • See areas of the catacombs that are normally closed to the public like a secret chapel!

Description

Your tour begins by walking directly past the queue to go straight into the catacombs. This huge underground cemetery consists of kilometres of underground tunnels lined with the skulls and bones of some 6 million Parisians. Accompanied by a local guide and a small group of 19 people or less, you will explore this incredible city of the dead, where each room reveals more and more elaborate and macabre bone decorations

Along the way, you will learn the incredible story of how the catacombs were built and the massive project undertaken to move bones from all over the city to here. Your special access status means that the guards will also open gates just for your party and let you into areas such as a secret chapel decorated with skulls and thighbones.

Believe it or not, the Parisian catacombs are as much a symbol of the city as Notre Dame or the Eiffel Tower. They contain bones that represent some 2,000 years of history, and their construction was a unique civil engineering project that contributed to the creation of the modern city. If you want to see a different and totally surprising side of the City of Lights, this is the perfect starting point.

Please note

Additional information

Tips to the guides are welcome, but never obligatory.

Unfortunately the catacombs are not accessible for wheelchairs or prams.

To ensure the safety of visitors, the French authorities enforce security measures when entering the catacombs. Only bags smaller than 55 cm x 35 cm x 20 cm will be accepted. Walks is not responsible if you are denied access because your luggage is too large. Please excuse the inconvenience and delays that may be caused by additional security checks.

The catacombs have changed their admission policy to ensure that only 200 people have access at any one time. Although our tickets are booked in advance and you don't have to queue, there may be a slight delay when you enter if the capacity is already reached. We anticipate that cases will be limited, but please be patient if you are travelling on a busy day and are affected by this unavoidable circumstance.

Please note that there are 130 steps to the catacombs. Unfortunately there is no access to the elevator. Persons with heart problems, claustrophobia or other complaints should consider this before booking this tour.

The Paris Catacomb tunnels are often wet and cool (14°C all year round). We recommend that you wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing.

Please note that there are neither toilets nor cloakrooms in the catacombs.

Comfortable hiking boots recommended.

Pregnant women may be denied access to the catacombs. If you are visibly pregnant, we recommend that you do not take this tour and cannot take responsibility if you are denied entry.
