The chapel is not very big, but very worth seeing. During the visit of the Conciergerie, the entrance hall alone impressed us.

Your experience

  • Let yourself be surprised by the Sainte Chapelle - the most beautiful royal chapel in France - and marvel at the remarkable 15-metre high stained glass windows
  • Visit one of the most important prison camps of the French Revolution, the Conciergerie, and the memorial chapel of the most famous prisoner, Marie-Antoinette.
  • Get priority admission to two of the most important historical attractions of Paris at the Palais de la Cité, the former residence of the kings of France until the 14th century

Description

If modern Paris has overwhelmed you with its boutiques, bicycles and baguettes, you should take a trip back to two of the most interesting and historic sites in the medieval Palais de la Cité, the former residence of the kings of France. Sainte Chappelle, with its fascinating stained glass windows, was the home of Christ's crown of thorns, while the Conciergerie was the home, or rather the prison, of Marie-Antoinette! This ticket gives you priority access to both.

Experience two impressive monuments from France's past - a 13th century church with brilliant stained glass windows and a medieval royal palace where the French royal family once resided. With this priority entrance ticket you can skip the queue at both venues. NOTE: All visitors must pass through security checks.

Sainte-Chapelle:
Proudly situated on the Ile de la Cite, this intimate chapel and UNESCO World Heritage Site was inaugurated on 26 April 1248. It was commissioned by King Louis IX, who wanted a beautiful place to house his collection of religious relics, including Christ's crown of thorns.

The Gothic chapel is famous for its collection of 15 beautiful stained glass windows depicting 1,113 scenes from the Old and New Testaments, as well as for the transfer of relics to Paris, where the church's patron saint, King Louis, plays an important role. On a sunny day, the light streaming in through these windows makes you forgive every drop of rain that has ever fallen on Paris.

Conciergerie:
This medieval royal palace was abandoned by the kings of France at the end of the 14th century (the settlement in the Louvre and the Vincennes was more attractive), whereupon it became a prison and a revolutionary tribunal. It was one of the most important places of detention during the French Revolution (then known as the "anteroom of the guillotine").

This assertion certainly applied to the most famous resident, the former Queen Marie Antoinette. As you wander through the Salle des Gardes (Guards' Room) and the huge Salle des Gens d'armes (Hall of Soldiers), think how she must have felt trapped here. Her memorial chapel was built on the site of her cell during the renovation.

Histopad for the conciergerie:
Explore medieval and revolutionary spaces (as well as rooms that have disappeared) with the Histopad, an augmented reality tool that lets you go back in time.
