Your experience

  • See the world's largest collection of paintings by the Dutch master Pieter Brueghel the Elder from the 16th century
  • Visit a museum that is on a par with the Louvre, the Prado and the Vatican
  • Experience masterpieces by Caravaggio, Titian, Peter Paul Rubens and many others

The Kunsthistorisches Museum is a magnificent art festival of the best artists and craftsmen in Europe. The collection, which was assembled by the now extinct House of Habsburg, includes many important masterpieces of the Renaissance, all housed under an elegant dome.

In 1891 the Habsburg Emperor Franz Joseph I opened the Kunsthistorisches Museum on Vienna's Ringstrasse. With the neoclassical new building, the huge (and enormously enviable) Habsburg art collection could finally be housed under one roof. The masterpieces of some of the best artists in Europe that are on display in Vienna are an experience not to be missed.

The building itself is a feast for the eyes - with marble floors, murals, gold leaf and elegant staircases that deserve to be shown impressive works. And they do.

The works of art collected over six hundred years extend over five millennia. In fact, this museum is in no way inferior to the other top European museums - the Vatican Museums, El Prado, the Louvre. The collection, which stretches from ancient Egypt to classical Rome and the Renaissance, is a testimony to the exquisite taste and enormous power of the House of Habsburg

If you have little time, you should go directly to the Picture Gallery, with highlights such as Pieter Bruegel, the Elder Tower of Babel, Giuseppe Arcimboldo's Summer and Raphael's Madonna of the Meadow.

NOTE: The mirror-image building opposite Maria-Theresien-Platz is the Natural History Museum. It was opened at the same time as her twin - for the accumulated wealth of the Habsburgs occupied the space. If you manage it, each museum earns at least half a day of your time.
