Description

The aura and architecture of St. John Lateran will amaze you. It is the oldest basilica of Christianity and dates back to the 300s. Around 1700 the building was lovingly and magnificently restored. It is one of the seven pilgrimage churches in Rome, uniquely combining religious significance and visual beauty.

Enter one of the largest basilicas in the world, which is already an experience from the outside. On the roof of the impressive neoclassical façade there are life-size marble statues of Jesus and various saints. The Holy Door on the far right is only opened every 25 years by the Pope, while you will pass through the solid bronze door in the middle, which originally belonged to the Senate in the Roman Forum

Be impressed by the size and beauty of the building. The nave welcomes you under the vaulted ceilings, while sunlight enters through high windows. Flanked by a double nave and impressive marble statues that emphasize the rectangular lines, the design seems to force you into a vaulted apse.

Let your eyes wander over the elaborate and varied decoration

The building in its present form is mostly from the 17th century, but there are relics and remains from earlier times. See a beautiful gothic altar from the 13th century, two gilded bronze columns from the second century and the Holy Stairs. This is the one that Jesus climbed during the Passion and that was brought to Rome many centuries ago
