Your experience

Highlights

  • Spend the day as the ancient Romans would have done and wander through the alleys and plains of this remarkable complex of 150 shops and offices
  • The groundbreaking architect Apollodorus of Damascus designed the entire complex, including the remarkable Great Hall, which serves as the entrance hall for the entire complex. Take a look at the sophisticated six-way concrete cross in the vaulted ceiling above your head, a perfect solution to support the weight of the 32 m long ceiling
  • Take the stairs and go up a few floors above the Great Semicircle. You get a wonderful view of Trajan's markets, Trajan's Forum and the rest of the old town

Description

The markets of Trajan were built for the emperor Trajan by the legendary architect Apollodorus of Damascus around 107-110 AD. The stores are considered to be the world's first large shopping centre complex with around 150 shops and administrative offices. The markets bordered the Forum of Trajan, where the spectacular Trajan Column still stands today. This ticket also includes admission to the fascinating museum of the Kaiserforum.

If you want to imagine what the ancient city of Rome was really like at its height, a visit to the markets of Trajan is an absolute must.

Emperor Trajan, who was officially celebrated by the Senate as optimus princeps ("the best ruler"), was also one of the greatest architects of the Roman era - together with his architect Apollodorus of Damascus, the mastermind behind the markets of Trajan.

Inside the complex you can dive into the more than 150 tabernae (shops) while entering the old Via Biberatica - the main shopping street. As the first covered shopping centre in history, this complex is the model for every megamall we have today.

The Museum of the Imperial Forum (inside) informs about the complex network of forums (city squares) that make up the ancient city.
