  • Take the famous local train, taxi and local bus to Mumbai

Description

Welcome your fellow guests and your Foodie Guide at 4 pm in the Fort district and set off through the streets of Mumbai's colonial heart. Enjoy a pipe with a refreshing Masala lime juice and visit a small Hindu temple for a blessing before starting the actual culinary tour with a banana leaf covered with 8 curries, cucumbers and chutneys that explode with taste. You will get explanations for each one if you dip with crispy papers and taste a fried, spiced, local fish, which is best eaten covered with zingy lime.

While you walk past the old buildings on your way to the station, your guide will tell you stories about life in old Bombay. On the way you will go to one of the few remaining Persian cafés in town to taste their famous good apple pie and a cup of good old Indian chai. Drive to a famous Paan house to taste Betal leaves with dried fruits, nuts and syrups and let your taste buds explode with a cone of sticky-sweet-sour tamarind.

It's time to take the Mumbai suburban train. Don't worry, you won't have to wait long. These open trains run every 5 minutes and offer a good opportunity to see a piece of real Bombay. Get off at Chowpatty Beach and visit the many street vendors. Your guide will show you a small spot on the sand and you can watch the melting sunset over Mumbai while you enjoy a vegetable curry with paneer cheese and other street snacks such as puffed rice Bhel Puri and crispy little mussels filled with herbal puree and tamarind called Pani Puri.

The tour's not over yet. Your guide will invite you in old taxis to a short trip to the Muslim quarter known for its hearty cuisine. To help you digest a little, your guide will take you for a stroll through a lively fresh produce market to learn more about Indian ingredients and then for a stroll through the Bazaar Choir, where you will discover its fascinating history. Hidden in an untraceable place you will taste 3 different kinds of delicious kebabs prepared with charcoal in a small local restaurant.

It is inconceivable to visit Mumbai without trying the desserts. You will visit a famous restaurant that has been hand braising its ice cream in the same way for over a century and take an exclusive look back to see how it is made before you plunge into your exotic taste of choice. On the way to the bus stop you make a short stop for coconut cake from an old bakery and taste creamy pheni in a local restaurant. The tour ends at the sparkling lights of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in the fort area. Say goodbye to your fellow travellers and your guide will help you organize the transport or take you back to your hotel.

Go with a much deeper understanding of Mumbai culture, life and cuisine.
