Welcome your guide in front of the Esplanade metro station at 5 pm and take the train to a district that is little visited by tourists and known for its good cuisine. When you get off the boat, dive right in with an exotic lettuce found at a local street vendor before jumping into a small shop that has been preparing some of the best Masala curries in Kolkata for more than a century. While you are eating, your guide will tell you stories from ancient Kolkata.
Get on a local bus and drive to one of Kolkata's most famous fish restaurants, where you can taste the typical jumbo shrimp with chingri-coconut-cream sauce and a delicious curry-fish mousse in a banana leaf. After departure you board one of the old Richshaws, the only place where these wooden wagons still exist in India, and take a short tour through the area on the way to the next foodie stop. The gorge on a shrimp kabiraji in a legendary kitchen founded by a Scotsman in the 19th century.
Kolkata may seem lively, but your guide will take you for a walk through a peaceful neighborhood and show you the temples and life in the area. As you meander through the alleys of ancient Kolkata, you'll taste delicacies ranging from the city's most famous onion bhajis to zigzag gram salads of herbs and legumes.
Enjoy the local ginger with chai tea before boarding one of the old trams that have been traveling the streets of Kolkata for over a century for a short trip to College Street. Here many school booksellers are overtaken by students on their way back from the lectures. Visit a local café for a famous coconut sorbet drink and then go shopping at a nearby candy store in Begali. The evening ends in the faded splendour of the old colonial coffee shop, where the students discuss, the ceiling fans whirl and the waiters serve coffee in traditional costume.
This is not just a foodie tour, it is a tour into the heart of Kolkata.
