Your experience

Highlights

  • Get special access to the terraces of St. Mark's Basilica with spectacular views over Venice
  • Enjoy skip-the-line access to the Doge's Palace
  • Visit the Doge's chambers, the Hall of the Great Council (with frescoes by Veronese and Tintoretto), the Arsenal and the new prisons in the Doge's Palace

Description

Your tour starts at the world famous St. Mark's Square, where you will take a moment before diving into the world of St. Mark's Cathedral. Inside you will get a deep insight into the way Venice built a trading empire that once spanned the entire Mediterranean Sea. While you contemplate the mosaics and other treasures inside, your experienced Venetian guide will explain how the city went from being a small island to one of the greatest powers of the Middle Ages. You will also have special access to the terrace on the first floor where you can see the famous horses stolen from Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade. In addition, from here you have a fantastic view of St. Mark's Square and the city

Next, we head to the Doge's Palace, where the maps once again lead us past the queues and into the heart of the Empire. Here you can visit the Doge's opulent chambers and the Hall of the Grand Council, where state affairs were decided under beautiful frescoes by Veronese and Tintoretto. You'll also see the Armory and the New Prisons, where you'll learn about the dark life of anyone who had the misfortune to get in there. You will also learn the secret of the mysterious black veil that interrupts the official series of portraits of the Doge. Tip: You will not want to work in the Venetian government

Afterwards you will walk across the Bridge of Sighs and learn why this romantic icon is a little grimmer than you probably realized.

Venice is a beautiful city, but it doesn't really come to life unless you have an experienced local Venetian guide to show you around and tell you the stories that will take you deep into the life of the city. In a small group of no more than 25 people, you will have direct access to your guide and can ask him or her all questions about the exciting history of one of the most unique cities in the world
