Terraces of the Basilica of St. Mark
Spectacular view over Venice
Experienced Venetian guide
We start at the world-famous St. Mark's Square and take a moment before diving into St. Mark's Cathedral. There, you will gain a deep insight into the way Venice built a trading empire that once crossed the entire Mediterranean sea. As you look at the mosaics and other treasures inside, your experienced Venetian guide will tell you how the city changed from a small island to one of the greatest powers of the Middle Ages. You will also have special access to the terrace on the first floor, where you can see the famous horses stolen from Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade. In addition, you have a fantastic view of St. Mark's Square and the city.
Next we go to the Doge's Palace, where the tickets once again lead us past the queues and into the heart of the Empire. Here you will visit the sumptuous apartments of the Doge and the hall of the Great Council, where the affairs of state were decided under beautiful frescoes by Veronese and Tintoretto. You will also see the Armoury and the New Prisons, where you will learn about the dark life of anyone who has had the bad luck to get imprisoned. Moreover, you will learn the secret of the mysterious black veil that interrupts the official series of Doge portraits. Tip: You won't want to work in the Venetian government.
Then hike across the Bridge of Sighs and learn why this romantic icon is a little grimmer than you were probably taught.
Venice is a beautiful city, but it doesn't really come to life unless you have an experienced local Venetian guide to show you around and tell you the stories that bring you deep into the heart of the city. In a small group of no more than 25 people, you have direct access to your guide and can ask him any question about the special history of one of the world's most unique cities.
Gratuities to guides are appreciated but never obligatory.
