Description

Walk through the portico and then turn right into the Queen's Gallery. This public art gallery is part of Buckingham Palace and therefore a very special place to view some (royally recognised) works of art! The recent exhibition Charles II: Art & Power celebrates the opulence of the Stuart court and examines the role of the arts in the restoration of the monarchy.

After a decade of austerity under the reign of Oliver Cromwell, Charles II endeavoured to restore the royal courts to their former glory by commissioning countless works of art and decorations that glorified and legitimised the monarchy.

The highlight of the new exhibition is John Michael Wright's larger-than-life portrait of Charles II in coronation robe and the genuine silver plate that was on the high altar at Westminster Abbey during Charles' coronation.

You will also see paintings by the old masters, rich tapestries and a spectacular collection of silver-gilded furniture that would sparkle throughout the Stuart court.

Don't forget your free multimedia guide for special insights and comments from Royal Collection Trust experts!

Badly organised...the confirmation said to meet in front of Buckingham Palace. Unfortunately, no one was to be found there. We have contacted the provider via WhatsApp, no response. Then we called and there we got a confirmation that we should wait in front of Buckingham Palace as stated in the confirmation, then we were told that it was not a guided tour but that we should just go in. Well, we have never been to England but you can't just "walk in" to Buckingham Palace... the staff on the phone didn't know what to do. We hung up and asked a policeman who said we had to go in the side entrance. From there, everything was clear, but the actual tour and/or the Queens Gallery was a little disappointing... 3 rooms with paintings and some furniture and a shop. So in summary, disappointing also for the money and very very very bad organization...
