Hadrian was a humanist and a lover of Greek culture, which can also be seen in this building. Villa Adriana in Tivoli will delight you with its combination of elements of the architectural heritage of Egypt, Greece and Rome. Originally intended as a retreat, Hadrian made it his official residence around 128 AD, where he lived with his court and ruled Rome from outside the city.
Explore the huge park, which includes a large complex of classic buildings. See ancient Roman ruins, spas and 17th century houses. Highlights of your visit are the Teatro Marittimo, an artificial island that was a private residence of the emperor, the Canopo, a huge rectangular pool surrounded by sculptures, and the tomb Hadrian is said to have built for his lover Antinous after he drowned in Egypt.
