The Al Thakira Mangrove in the north will inspire you with its variety of birds.
Be enchanted by the 60 hectare UNESCO World Heritage Site Al Zubarah Fort
You start the tour with a visit to the harbour of Al Khor, the centre for pearl diving and fishing in ancient times. Then you will get to know Al Thakira Mangroves, a large vegetation area that attracts a varied bird life with flamingos and herons. Al Thakira Mangroves lies north of the city of Al Khor and offers a large area of natural green, in sharp contrast to the surrounding desert landscape. With a kayak, which is available at different tour operators, one can experience the mangroves particularly well. You will then discover Al Zubarah Fort on the north-west coast of Qatar, a UNESCO-approved cultural heritage site. The surrounding area covers 60 hectares with other large archaeological works. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most extensive and best-preserved examples of an 18th-19th century settlement. It comprises the remains of a walled coastal town, once considered one of the most important pearl diving and trading centres on the Gulf, with connections to the Indian Ocean. Finally, you will visit a traditional Qatari village in the north, with houses of limestone and mud. Al Shamal is the northern point of Qatar, from where you can see Bahrain on clear days.
