Your experience

Highlights

  • Learn all about pearl diving while visiting Al Khor's harbour
  • The northern Al Thakira mangrove will delight you with its variety of birds
  • Be enchanted by the 60 hectare UNESCO World Heritage Al Zubarah Fort

Description

You start the tour with a visit to the port of Al Khor, the centre for pearl diving and fishing in old times. Then you will get to know Al Thakira mangroves, a large vegetation area that attracts a varied bird life with flamingos and herons. Al Thakira Mangrove is located north of the city of Al Khor and offers a large area of natural greenery, which stands in sharp contrast to the surrounding desert landscape. With a kayak, which is available from various tour operators, you can experience the mangroves particularly well. Afterwards you will discover the UNESCO recognized cultural heritage Al Zubarah Fort on the northwest coast of Qatar. The surrounding area covers 60 hectares with other large archaeological works The UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most extensive and best preserved examples of a settlement from the 18th to 19th centuries. It includes the remains of a walled coastal town, once considered one of the most important pearl diving and trading centres in the Gulf, with links to the Indian Ocean. Finally, you will visit a traditional Qatari village in the north, with houses made of limestone and mud. Al Shamal is the north point of Qatar, from where you can see Bahrain on clear days.
