Description

Thessaloniki was for a long time the second city in the largest empire the world has ever seen, the Roman Empire. It is one of the most historical cities in Europe, which has grown during the time when Paris (Lutetia) and London (Londinium) were small cities.

The main theme of the historical tour of Thessaloniki could be nothing else but the architecture and churches that explain why Thessaloniki is on the UNESCO list. The tour of the city will include almost all the major sights. Thessaloniki is one of the few cities in the world that can boast monuments and sights from ancient times to pre-modern times. Thessaloniki has a Hellenistic past, a glorious Roman past, an important Byzantine period and finally the Ottoman period. Greeks, Romans, "Byzantines" and Ottomans owned the city over the centuries and made it the most important city in their empire. This is why Thessaloniki today is so rich in monuments and art treasures. All these historical circumstances make Thessaloniki unique and a wonderful destination. Very few cities in the world can take you through history as excitingly as Thessaloniki.

Of course there is much more information about the city, such as restaurants and places to visit, but this tour is all about history, religion and religious monuments. Here in Thessaloniki we have our patron saint Demetrius and also Saint Gregory Palamas, perhaps the most important Orthodox theologian of the last 1000 years. Thessaloniki was also the city from which the two brothers from Thessaly, St. Cyril and Methodius, started their journey to enlighten the medieval Slavs and to teach them the alphabet

The sights of Thessaloniki:

  • The White Tower of Thessaloniki

  • The Roman Forum

  • Arch of Galerius (or Kamara)

  • Rotunda

  • Church of St. Demetrius and old crypt

  • Church of Acheiropoietos (built around 450 AD)

  • Church of Hagia Sophia (built around 650 AD)

  • Palaiological churches (13th-14th centuries), which are on the UNESCO list.

  • 2 mosques from the 15th century (Alaca Imaret, Hamza Bey Camii)

  • Ottoman baths (Bey Hamam, 1444)

  • Heptapyrgion (the Roman and then Ottoman fortress on the hill of the city) together with the strong walls of Thessaloniki.

In Greece there is a complex procedure for obtaining the typical tour guide licence. I personally did not get it, although I have an MA in history. That won't be a problem, in some places I will make my comments before we go in for a viewing "as friends".

On Mondays most of the city's attractions are closed to visitors and can only be seen from the outside, so Monday is not recommended for guided tours.

Moreover, most of the sightseeings of Thessaloniki, also the churches are only open until noon, so that the tour should start in the morning. A useful advice would be to wear comfortable shoes and a hat for the Greek sun and to have cool water with you.

Please note
