Description

Bran Castle aka Dracula's Castle is a military fortress built in 1377 by the Hungarian King Ludovic I. D'Anjou in southern Transylvania was built to stop the Ottoman invasion of Europe. Completed in 1382, it was "THE GATE" of Europe that protected the southern border of the Austrian Empire from the invaders during the war. In the time of peace, it acted as customs and raised a lot of money from taxes paid by anyone who wanted to enter Transylvania. merchants or just travelers. It became world-famous at the end of the 19th century when the Irishman Bram Stoker published Dracula, the world's most famous horror book. After a major explosion in the southwest tower in 1827, the fortress was abandoned until 1920, when Queen Mary of Romania, wife of the second German king, began a massive restoration of this imposing building. Confiscated by the Communists in 1948, it became the property of the Habsburgs 61 years later.
