Description

The Ara Pacis Museum, designed by the architect Richard Meier, is the only significant contemporary building to have been built in the historic centre of Rome since the Second World War.

If you had lived in Rome 2000 years ago, you would be very, very old now. But also important, because you would have been alive during the time of Augustus the first Roman emperor (and grandnephew of Julius Caesar).

His reign led to a time when the Roman Empire was largely free of major conflicts. The period known as Pax Romana (The Roman Peace) lasted for over two centuries.

The Ara Pacis ("Altar of Peace") was Augustus' way of declaring his commitment to peace. See the "Altar of Peace", originally consecrated in 9 B.C. and then buried for centuries, and other burdens as you step directly into living history.
