Description

The cathedral, dedicated to St. Paul, has towered over the City of London since 604 A.D., constantly reminding this great commercial centre of the importance of the spiritual side of life. Today's cathedral - the fourth to be built on this site - was designed by court architect Sir Christopher Wren and built between 1675 and 1710, after its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. Its architectural and artistic importance reflects the determination of the five monarchs who oversaw the building that London's leading church should be as beautiful and imposing as their private palaces

Visitors can now enjoy a new inclusive multimedia guide that combines contemporary photography, archive footage (including the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer) and the voices of those who work at St. Paul's today with interviews and commentary from, among others, the Dean of St. Paul's, the Conservator and Music Director.

Visitors can also enjoy the new exhibition "Oculus: An Eye into St Paul's". As the first project of its kind in a cathedral, Oculus brings 1400 years of history to life with 270 films. Located in the atmospheric former treasury in the crypt, Oculus takes visitors to the places that were destroyed in the middle of the construction of the first St. Paul's in 604 AD, before showing them the Great Fire of 1666 and the devastation of London in a flash, when St. Paul became a lasting symbol of strength, survival and hope.

The Golden Gallery is the smallest of the galleries, running around the highest point of the outer dome, 85.4 meters (280ft) and 530 steps from the ground floor. While the dome and galleries were being built, Wren was dragged up and down in a basket at least once a week to inspect the ongoing work. He was 76 years old when this work was completed in 1708 and he watched his son place the last stone in position.

St. Paul's is built in the shape of a cross, with the dome crowning the intersection of the arms. At 111.3 metres high, it is one of the largest domes in the world. It weighs around 65,000 tons and is supported by eight columns. Between the arches of the inner dome there are mosaics of prophets and saints, which were erected between 1864 and 1888. The murals in the dome were created between 1715 and 1719 by the court painter Sir James Thornhill and show scenes from the life of St. Paul.

The stone gallery is one of the two galleries above the "Whispering Gallery", which surrounds the outside of the dome. The stone gallery is 53.4 meters (173 ft) from the ground floor. It is achieved in 378 steps

The "Whispering Gallery" runs around the interior of the dome and is 259 steps from the ground floor. It takes its name from a charming peculiarity in its construction, which makes a whisper against its walls audible on the opposite side.
