This place looks like a fantasy film - as if a dragon could fall down at any moment when entering the walls. But you have not entered a parallel universe - you have just discovered the Abbaye du Mont Saint-Michel. This amazing world heritage site is right off the rocky coast of Normandy. It's a medieval must-see! Explore 20 rooms, breathtaking gardens and enjoy panoramic sea and sky views.
Le Mont Saint-Michel is a small island community in Normandy, and the Abbey du Mont Saint-Michel is definitely its crowning glory. It towers over everything like a great stone soldier when the waves fall onto its rocky shores. The veneration of the Archangel Michel first took place here in 708 A.D., making it the best place for a medieval pilgrimage.
In the 10th century the Benedictine monks recognised its importance and immediately began to build a real abbey here. In 1874 the abbey was placed under a preservation order after the monks said goodbye in 1790. Today it attracts as many people as it did hundreds of years ago, thanks to its airy interior and majestic location.
With over 20 rooms and towers rising above the city and below, there is much to discover. You can also join a guided group for free - just ask on arrival and you will be assigned to a group for a tour.
If you walk through the abbey, take the opportunity to see the tide rolling in and out (it has the highest tide variations in Europe, tide and low tide of up to 15 metres in just six hours). When you reach the top of the abbey, you will be rewarded with incredible panoramas; you will feel like the king of a French castle. Or the abbot of a French abbey.
There's no WiFi at the venue and mobile reception is pretty poor, so make sure you download your tickets first.
