Your experience

  • Stroll around the only surviving original medieval building on the Royal Mile of Edinburgh and learn more about former residents
  • Find the dragon's nest and the time capsule hiding between the books in the John Knox House bookshop
  • See the tricks and traps that deceive intruders and hunt for the devil hiding in the ceiling of the Oak Room

Enjoy the drama, trials and tribulations of Scotland's turbulent past in this amazing medieval building dating from 1470. John Knox House is Edinburgh's only surviving building of its kind and the only original medieval building still standing on the Royal Mile. Explore three floors and meet past residents and the notorious Mary Queen of Scots.

Once associated with the Scottish Reformation - a time of great unrest in Scottish history that led to civil war and the abdication of Mary, the Queen of Scots - the fascinating John Knox House is a lesson in history.

A notable resident in the 1550s was James Mosman, friend, jeweller and goldsmith of Mary Queen of Scots. Later, in 1573, he was executed as a traitor. If only walls could talk!

Explore three levels of 15th century craftsmanship as you learn about John Knox himself. This Scottish minister, theologian, writer and leader of the Reformation was only here for a while (he died in 1572), but thanks to his connection with the place he was saved from demolition in the 1850s.

Time capsules to mark this rescue were found in the walls during an excavation and can be seen in the bookshop.

At John Knox House there are dramas on every corner, and if stories about the Reformation don't impress children, they'll love looking for the Dragon's Nest in the bookstore!
