Christ Church, built in the 11th century, is Dublin's original medieval cathedral and houses one of the largest crypts in Britain and Ireland. It is one of the largest and oldest of its kind in the British Isles and houses majestic tombs and valuable medieval works of art, while the King's Treasury in the crypt houses incredible sacred relics.
Christ Church is Dublin's first cathedral and the seat of its archbishops for a thousand years. As you enter the sacred doors, you will follow in the footsteps of some saints.
Here King Henry II received Holy Communion for the first time in 1171 after his Archbishop St Thomas Beckett was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral. It must have been a rather tense ceremony.
A decade later, reconstruction began to transform this wooden cathedral into a stone one. Since then it has been renovated several times, but the crypt is still completely original.
In the crypt, whose massive stone pillars carry the entire weight of the cathedral, you can see Tom and Jerry, the mummified remains of a cat and rat stuck in an organ pipe.
These two certainly impressed James Joyce because they were mentioned in his last great work, Finnegan's Wake.
