Description

Christ Church, built in the 11th century, is Dublin's most original medieval cathedral and houses one of the largest crypts in Britain and Ireland. It is one of the largest and oldest of its kind in the British Isles and features majestic tombs and valuable medieval artwork, while the King's Treasury in the crypt houses incredible sacred relics.

Christ Church is Dublin's first cathedral and has been the seat of its archbishops for a thousand years. When you enter the hallowed doors, you will follow in the footsteps of some saints.

It was here that King Henry II first received Holy Communion in 1171 after his Archbishop St Thomas Beckett was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral. A decade later, reconstruction began to transform this wooden cathedral into a stone one. Since then it has been renovated several times, but the crypt is still completely original.

In the crypt, whose massive stone pillars bear the entire weight of the cathedral, you can see Tom and Jerry, the mummified remains of a cat and rat stuck in an organ pipe.

These two certainly impressed James Joyce, as they were mentioned in his last major work, Finnegan's Wake.
