Thanks to the vanity of the former emperors and popes, two cultures merge in Rome. Explore the history of the city through its numerous obelisks.
Experience Rome off the beaten track
Stroll through Rome in a small group and immerse yourself in history
Marvel at famous as well as less known obelisks and the adjoining sights
Rome is the city with the largest number of obelisks in the world. During this four-hour walk you will discover Rome off the beaten track. Visit the most important obelisks of the Eternal City and search for traces of the differences between the Egyptian obelisks and their Roman copies.
You will find obelisks at the most important tourist attractions, but they are more than just decorative accessories. As symbols of the great urban planning that began at the end of the XVI century, they tell you the story of the transformation of Rome - from the medieval city to the modern cradle of Baroque art.
Your guide will introduce you to the obelisks of San Giovanni in Laterano and Santa Maria Maggiore, both standing in front of two imposing and world-famous churches. Then head for the obelisks in Rome's main squares: Piazza del Popolo, Piazza Navona and Piazza Rotonda, right in front of the Pantheon. Your tour ends at St. Peter's Square, where you can admire the obelisk and discover the ancient legend behind its position in the centre of the square.
