La Traviata in Rome:
La Traviata is a three-part opera by Giuseppe Verdi based on an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. It was premiered on 6 March 1853 at the opera La Fenice in Venice. Verdi insisted on finding an original and provocative idea for the audience in Venice and decided to base his work on La dame aux Camélias (1852), a piece inspired by the novel by Alexandre Dumas (fils). The play was originally entitled Violetta, after the protagonist. This famous opera is still one of the most frequently performed masterpieces in the entire lyrical tradition. The soloists of Opera e Lirica from the most important Italian theatres and music academies will perform this breathtaking story accompanied by choir and orchestra under the direction of Maestro Nicola Hansalik Samale. The audience will enjoy an extraordinary and unforgettable experience, surrounded by the fascinating atmosphere of St. Paul... The story will also be enriched by beautiful dancers from Opera e Lirica who will perform romantic choreographies.
The opera follows the story of the courtesan Violetta, who is presented as a vicious lady and lives free from any bondage. Later, however, she is unexpectedly overwhelmed by her love for Alfredo, a young upper-class man who warns her that she should take care of her health as her lifestyle has led her to contract tuberculosis. Violetta renounces her status and independence and lets Paris live with Alfredo in the country. His father, however, reaches out to her to ask her to part with Alfredo, as her relationship affects the honour of his family and prevents Alfredo's sister from marrying. Alfredo doesn't know why his lover broke up with him and only finds out the truth when it's too late. Violetta dies in his arms. Violetta's character was inspired by the true story of the famous courtesan Marie Duplessis, who herself had a turbulent love affair with Alexandre Dumas Fils. He saw her die when she was only thirty-three years old and he collected his memories of her in the famous book The Lady of the Camellias, on which La Traviata is based.
