In competition with Sintra as one of the most attractive places in Portugal, Bussaco (or Buçaco) is a treasure in the central region of the country and is only 30 minutes away from Coimbra!
The National Forest of Bussaco is a protected area created by the Order of the Carmelitas Descalços, who were given this land at the beginning of the 17th century to build a spiritual retreat with a monastery.
In 1888, the Portuguese crown began to build a royal palace on the same site as the monastery, which had to be partially demolished to make way for the newer neo-Romanueline building.
On this tour you will pass Luso, the place with the most famous spring/well in Portugal! As you drive up the mountain, you'll have an unobstructed view of the nearby plains and mountains that stretch as far as the sea. You can walk uphill while visiting the houses of the forest. You can make a stop for shopping or coffee before going down again.
