Stroll through the backyards of Berlin's Mitte district away from the classic sights. The old alleys and courtyards of today's trendy district around Hackescher Höfe are packed with history and stories from the last 300 years.
Our tour begins at Hackescher Markt, leads through Haus Schwarzenberg, where time seems to have stood still, and through the famous Hackescher Höfe. We follow the small streets, which today still correspond to the city plan of the 18th century and walk on the traces of the old Jewish community to the New Synagogue. You will also hear the history of the St. Hedwig Hospital, the baroque Sophienkirche and the Jewish cemetery from 1671.
Some of the backyards we will visit are so tranquil that you will almost forget the turbulent Berlin, others are completely conquered - see how horse stables turned into restaurants, factories into galleries and poor tenements into luxury apartments. Nowadays you will look in vain for dormitory boys and working class children - gentrification has Berlin Mitte firmly under control. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, this district, which was located in the east of the city, was taken over by squatters, students and young artists, and today you will find the highest rents in the city here.
We finish our tour in front of Clärchen's Ballhaus, Berlin's oldest ballroom, which still adorns the entrance sign of Otto Dix. Once located in the backyard, you can now enjoy your beer in the front garden - where doors lead into nowhere and you can still see on the walls that a front building is missing here. On this tour, the testimonies of history and modern life are richly contrasted.

On the 26th of June 2013, we participated in a very interesting and revealing tour through the backyards of Berlin. Susanne showed us some lesser known parts of Berlin in a very competent, funny and charming way. We can surely recommend this tour. Christiane and colleagues
