Description

The Dutch have always been an imaginative bunch and from the end of the 19th century onwards they set about harnessing the power of the wind that sweeps through this low-lying country by building windmills. Eventually, almost 10,000 of them would be scattered in the countryside, but today only a fraction of them are left, and a number of them can be seen in Zaanse Schans.

The village is only 20 minutes away from Amsterdam and has six historic windmills that merge together. These are all functioning windmills and are used in many ways. De Huisman is a mustard mill and you can explore it for free. The other windmills usually cost only €4 and the highlight is probably Het Jonge Schaap (The Young Sheep), one of the sawmills that helped the Dutch to win the championship at sea in the 16th century.

Step inside and see the large, tooth-like saw blades floating perpendicular to the ground and the wood being fed in. One of the friendly volunteers will be happy to tell you how the Dutch have reduced the construction time of a ship from three months to three weeks with this clever innovation!

Zaanse Schans, however, has more to offer than just windmills and is often called an open-air museum. There are about 35 historic houses, a few small museums and old craft shops - one of them sells traditional sweets and another one offers a demonstration of clog making every ten minutes.

The tour lasts three hours and there will be a tour guide on board the bus to introduce you to the country and local history. Afterwards you can explore Zaanse Schans at your own pace!
