Your experience

Description

In a monumental (and beautiful!) building on the Herengracht is the Amsterdam Canal Museum. A fast-paced tour takes you back to the time when Amsterdam was flourishing as the capital of the Dutch Golden Age.

Grab an audio guide as you enter and then take a seat. Minutes later the lights dim and you are back in 1600, the heyday of Amsterdam. Here you will find all the context you need to understand the famous (and UNESCO protected) canals of Amsterdam. And during your experience at the Museum of Canals (het Grachtenhuis) you will develop a deeper appreciation of this city and the waterways that shape it.

This museum uses a wide range of tools - holograms, paintings, models, audio guides and architecture (among others) to bring to life the meaning and experience of the famous Amsterdam waterways. Their role in the flourishing trade of this commercial culture is highlighted, as is the remarkable technical achievement they represent.

But not only the historical experience is shown here - the Amsterdam canals are a big part of daily life and city festivals, and this is also part of the museum here. The world famous Amsterdam Gay Pride Parade, the Beatles on their famous boat trip through the canals during the height of 'Beatlemania' and skating on the canals during the (now rare) cold winters. There is even an excerpt from the cult classic B-movie Amsterdamned

As the Grachtenhuis itself says: "This museum is for everyone who loves the city of Amsterdam or is just about to fall in love with it". Well, then it's for everyone.
