Your experience

Everyone knows the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles) has many other attractions that have helped it to earn its name. The baptistery and the cathedral are triumphs of medieval and gothic architecture. The Sinopie Museum offers you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the process of fresco production. And the breathtaking "cemetery" has arches, tombs, chapels and an inner courtyard, which gives it a reverent atmosphere.

Of course the Leaning Tower of Pisa is on your list, but Pisa's UNESCO World Heritage Site Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles) has much more to discover while you are here. This ticket gives you access to all other important buildings here

The Baptistry of St. John is not only the largest baptistry in Italy, it is also one of the most unique in the country. The construction began in 1153 in Romanesque style and ended in 1363 in Gothic style. The mix of styles gives it an unmistakable, yet remarkably coherent look.

The nearby cathedral (Dom) is dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption and was founded in 1064. Its architectural style is a mixture of Romanesque and Arabic, with elements of Byzantium and Mediterranean. One might think that this hodgepodge of ingredients would make it chaotic, but it is a remarkably beautiful and coherent structure. Although a fire in 1595 destroyed many Renaissance works of art, the mosaic of Christ in majesty in the apse from the early 14th century survived the fire.

The Monumental Cemetery (Camposanto monumentale) contains relics, tombs and a beautiful tiled cloister. After being damaged by fire during the Second World War, it is currently being restored. The frescos are slowly being returned to their original locations.

The actual drawings before the frescoes were painted (sinopie) had to be removed after the fire and today they have a special place: the Sinopie Museum. You can learn more about the ongoing restoration in this small but curious exhibition, which is located in a former hospital.

Piazza dei Miracoli is an incredible place to absorb history. Of course you are here to take a look at the boldly angled Wedding Tower, but the tourist who delves deeper into history will receive additional rewards - the area has been described as "one of the most beautiful architectural complexes in the world". So you don't just see part of it, you see the whole.
